Watching the news can be very depressing, with the violence, fraud, corruption and political shenanigans. When we see horrible things happen, it's easy to place all of the blame on the evildoers. And undoubtedly the blame does lie with those who do the wrong.
But blame is not something that can be placed completely on one party or another. Other people who did nothing are responsible as well; not for committing the wrong, but for failing to prevent it. The man who stands by and watches as an old woman is robbed and beaten can say, "But I didn't do anything!" And that's exactly why he has a share in the blame. He did nothing.
When good men stand, evil men are restrained. When good men sit idly by, evil men prevail. If we fail to stand against evil, we have no one to blame but ourselves when evil triumphs. In the words of Plato, "The price of apathy is to be ruled by evil men."
